Question of the Week: What Do You Need to Do to Win Today?

I’ve been thinking about success a lot lately. Everyone kind of defines it differently. To some business owners I know, success means 7+ figure profits and McMansions and a driveway full of German cars. To others it may mean winning an award or just getting home in time to tuck their kids in every night. But the bottom line is, success is about accomplishing your goals. About winning more days than you lose.

I read a story recently about a Congressman who decided to run for the Senate. It was an uphill battle against a mudslinging incumbent. But the good Congressman never lost sight of his goals. Every morning he would wake up and ask himself what he needed to do to win that day – how many calls he needed to make, how many hands he should shake, how many interviews he had to give,

that kind of thing. And when he laid his head down at night, he went over his day and if he’d done everything he set out to do, he figured he’d won that day. If he didn’t, he’d lost. On the morning of election day, he asked himself if he’d won more days than he’d lost. And he had – and he was sworn into the Senate the following January.

The Congressman didn’t try to win the election outright – he just tried to win every day. And as long as he won more days than he’d lost, he accomplished his ultimate goal. Too often we stop ourselves from ever succeeding because we don’t know where to start. We try to win the whole match when we should just concentrate on winning this particular point.

So what are you doing to win today?
